By Thursday, three days into his impromptu trip to Rahine, Imran finally felt as if he knew what he was doing. The trade delegates were listening when he spoke, even the ones who had looked slightly askance at finding him in Yeni's place at the table instead of his older brother. He had achieved all the goals that Ziad had laid out for him, and in a few cases, he had drastically improved on them.

I'll bet Ziad didn't know I had it in me. In all fairness, even I didn't know.

He grinned on the short walk back to his luxury hotel suite. Sarah would be thrilled for him, and there was no one he wanted to tell more. He had intended to call her once he got back to his room, but when he pulled out his phone to dial, it startled him by ringing.

He frowned for a moment, and then thumbed the answer button.

“Ziad! Good to hear from you!”

“Good to hear from you, brother, or at least, good to hear of you through the reports I've been getting. The papers and my reports have nothing but the highest praise for you and what you’re accomplishing.”

“Thought I would go and find a raft of models to run off with?” asked Imran with a grin, and his brother made a dismissive noise.

“I have seen the change in you, Imran. I know you wouldn't have done that. I know you take your responsibilities seriously. I simply did not expect you to excel as you have.” Ziad paused, and Imran waited. His brother was never this effusive. “I am proud of you, Imran. I know that father would be as well.”

Imran cleared his throat of the lump suddenly caught in it. “I hope I will always make you proud. Both of you.”

They talked for a short while more about the summit, Imran pacing in the hotel lobby.

“I'm due to be on a plane tomorrow. I know we have the jet here, but I was thinking I could take one of the small planes, get home a little faster, keep up with my flight hours…”

“Actually, I was hoping you would stay.”

Imran felt his stomach grow heavy. The first thing that flashed through his mind was Sarah's face, and then he banished it. He could not feel that longing and speak with his brother as well.

“Oh?” he asked.

“Yes. This is your chance, little brother. You are making friends and contacts throughout the Middle East, throughout the world. They are impressed with the new wunderkind, so keep it up. Just another few days. Cement the good impressions you’re making.”

The trouble was that Ziad was right. He had been a jet-setter all his life, but never before had he been invited to the private meetings, dinners, and cocktails where policy was decided as surely as it was at the summit grounds.

He reluctantly agreed, hung up with Ziad, then paused for a moment.

I am so sorry, Sarah. When I get back, I'll fill your room with peonies if it will make up for this.
